jimmy fallon, last late night, muppets

In a tender finale of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, host Jimmy Fallon kept it simple and sincere. Andy Samberg did the honors as last guest ever and lightened up the mood after Fallon’s teary round of heartfelt thank yous to his friends and crew. Samberg credited Fallon for getting him hired on Saturday Night Live, the beginning of everything for the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Golden Globe winner. SNL has proven itself to be a breeding ground for Golden Globe winners with fellow alumni like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Fallon closed out the final episode by playing “The Weight” with none other than musical guest, the Muppets. Who better to help him say goodbye to his late night time slot than the friends who made some of our favorite Late Night memories like “12 Days of Christmas” and “All I Want for Christmas” with the Roots and Mariah Carey?

Fallon played tenderly on drums and sang with no signs of parody or stifled laughter — a little out of character for America’s most adorable funny guy. No surprise cameos, not even from his infamous bestie, Justin Timberlake. At the end of the song, he exits the stage and walks down the hall and through a door labeled, “The Tonight Show.” The Roots and the show’s writers welcome him to the other side with champagne and cheer. It was sweet and sincere, just like Jimmy. Awww.
