20 feet from stardom, house of blues

The Broadcast Film Critics had their Celebration Of Black Cinema soiree at the House of Blues in Hollywood last night. The star-studded event included an out of the park performance from the talented gals from 20 Feet From Stardom, the Harvey Weinstein-backed documentary about back up singers that is winning awards all over the place. The divas included Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Tata Vega and Judith Hill, who was also a finalist on The Voice.

Co-Executive Produced by BFCA President Joey Berlin and KTLA’s Sam Rubin, the way fun event also included such notables as Penny Marshall, Robert Townsend, voiceover artist and agent James Mandell and his wife HGTV’s Lisa Johnson Mandell, Niecy Nash, sultry singer soon to appear on Arsenio Hall’s show Malina Moye, director/writer Marc Fusco, clairvoyant Chassidy Rana and mega successful songwriter Diane Warren.

Hill showed off her parents; in one of her sets her dad, Robert “Peewee” Hill, played bass and her Mom, Michiko, played keyboard. Fischer did a smoking version of “Fever”, Clayton bought down the house with her signature song “Gimme Shelter” and Love sang “Da Do Run Run” with gusto.  The appreciative crowd bopped and sang along with the songstresses.

The night started with a clip reel of the movies of the past year with strong African American themes and actors. Clayton told the rowdy crowd to shut up…and they deserved it.  She was giving the stink eye to the folks who were at the bar in the back who refused to be quiet. How rude!

The other highlight?  The amazing food, which included, shrimp, ham and chicken, crawfish and bacon mac and cheese, grits and pralines. To die for.  So between the gals and eats, a great night was had by all!
