The night before the Golden Globes, Hollywood folk try to throw as many shindigs as possible to take advantage of the celebs that are in town. The usually irascible Sean Penn was in a fine mood at the Montage in Beverly Hills. The event had the earliest start time, 6 p.m., so many VIPS went at least to the cocktail hour to support Penn’s cause, the J/P Haitian Relief Organization. This was the third annual GG fundraiser, always sponsored by Giorgio Armani and this year, more stars came out than ever.  The happy surprise ending? A three-song set by his buddies U2 to close the night. Biggie names such as Julia Roberts, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Kevin Bacon, Kathryn Bigelow, Diane Kruger, Idris Elba, Charlize Theron, Michael Douglas, Emma Thompson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin and more came out to support their pal.

Penn started the evening with his longtime agent CAA’s honcho Bryan Lourd and his longtime pal CNN’s Anderson CooperCooper told the crowd that, “Haiti is our neighbor, our love, Haiti.” Penn’s good friend Emma Thompson presented the U. S. Ambassador to Haiti, Pamela White, who kind of stunned the sedate crowd by saying, “I just want to tell you how much I hate charity.  The only think that makes human beings happy is being able to serve other people. Otherwise, what’s the f*cking point?”

Hilary Clinton thanked Penn via video, and the well monied crowd, including Anderson’s fellow CNN host Piers Morgan, who bid against Cooper for a yet unmade art piece by Jeff Koons, which Cooper won. Penn teased the crowd the whole night that they would be rewarded for their largess and he was right — U2 finished the night out.  Pretty cool.

Unfortunately, that was a tough act to follow. But at the same time, Paramount held their pre-party for their two red-hot nominees Nebraska and Wolf of Wall Street. At the Soho House, CBS was hawking their Inside Llewyn Davis, and at the Polo Lounge, Director David O’Russell and his lauded cast of American Hustle partied there.

So Sunday, all the folks recovering from last night have fashion stylists and hair and makeup people in their respective multi million dollar homes and their posh hotel rooms to get ready for the big show and the multitude of after parties. Relax folks; that shouldn’t be too hard to do soon, because champagne abounds at every table in the Grand Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton!
